Cage & Aviary Birds  |  No.5804 Red like a berry
M ANY CAGE AND aviary birds spend a large
proportion of their life sitting on perches
that their owners have supplied for them –
yet this isn’t an aspect of management that
we seem to discuss very much. Is that
because everybody gets perching right all the time?
I reckon not, and suspect that there’s a blind spot here
in some cases. Plainly, perching requirements vary with
type and size of bird: think of the advice offered by our
psittacine experts about the height and position of aviary
perches to offer parrots the best possible exercise.
At the other end of the scale, grip-free plastic perching
is still too prevalent among keepers of pet birds – a subject
that David Alderton has raised vigorously in these pages.
