Classic Military Vehicle  |  #153 It's a Gas
This is a confusing time in magazine production terms… this issue is mostly prepared in December 2013, comes out in January 2014, and yet has a cover date of February 2014. What isn’t at all confusing is that 2014 looks like being one heck of a good year for the classic military-vehicle enthusiast. Softened up by a creeping barrage of books concerning
every possible aspect of the two events that will be commemorated in 2014, the 70th anniversary of D-Day and the subsequent push through France and the Low Countries, and the centenary of the start of WW1, we can look forward to a packed calendar of events linked to one or both.
Inevitably most rally-type events will be WW2 focused, with the commemorations in Normandy attracting a lot of attention – indeed I doubt there is a reasonably-priced hotel room or campsite available within 50 miles of the beaches. At least there wasn’t one that I could find! But there are also some inspiring events elsewhere such as the tour organised by the 2nd Armored in Europe group (www.2ndarmoredineurope.co.uk) which is scheduled to finish at the always spectacular Tanks in Town event in Mons. Subsequently there is also the Project 70 tour commemorating the 70th anniversary of the
drive by 30 Corps to reach and rescue the 1st Airborne Division
at Arnhem. And of course, show organisers up and down the UK will
be making the most of this year’s possibilities by theming their events
one way or another. All in all, 2014 looks like being a vintage year. Bring it on!
