Eurythmics refused to be pigeonholed. They pushed the envelope. From one album to another, you never really knew what you’d get. Their music takes in everything from glacial synth-pop to experimental soundtrack work, funky R&B and arena rock. All topped off, of course, with one of the finest voices of the last 40 years.
Their bold adventurousness should not be underestimated or undervalued. Musicians being pressurised into bland conformity is an age-old problem. Managers, A&R men and all kinds of ‘advisers’ generally value consistency and predictability over risk-taking. But isn’t that a rather patronising view of the ability of the record-buying public to accept new sonic trailblazers?
