Is my European Firearms Pass still valid?
Q A fter nearly a year of restricted travel abroad, I am desperate next year to do some clay shooting in much sunnier climes. I usually make an annual trip to the continent, and I have missed it. I want to take my own shotgun with me, so I renewed my European Firearms Pass (EFP), which states it is valid until the middle of 2021. Can I still use it?
If you’re travelling abroad with your gun in 2021, you’ll need to liaise with the authorities in your destination
AI I
’m afraid that is unlikely. The EFP
was a useful, convenient way to
transport guns out of the UK to Europe and cut down on red tape for those wishing to shoot abroad. Sadly, as from 1 January 2021, UK residents are no longer be able to use an EFP and I believe this is the case even if the stated validity of the Pass is beyond that cut-off point.
You cannot therefore rely on it, so it is advisable to revert to the rather more cumbersome process of liaising with the police in the area you intend to travel to, and also to engage the help of your ‘host’ in whichever country will be your intended destination in order for them to act as a sponsor.
