What’s All the Fuss About...
Google’s dashcam data
It’s using footage from some devices to update Google Maps
What is it?
Google has said it routinely collects “short, silent” footage from dashboard cameras (dashcams) in cars for use with its mapping services (see www.snipca. com/53272).
Google’s spying on us again, then?
It’s an understandable conclusion to come to. After all, Google doesn’t exactly have the best track record at respecting your location privacy, as we explained in our recent ‘Stop Google Maps spying on you’ feature (Issue 696, page 62 – buy a back issue from www.snipca. com/53285). However, Google explains that it’s not collecting dashcam footage from the general public.
