Many people remain confused about whether they need a TV licence, but the rule is simple: you must have one if you watch any live TV on any broadcaster or service – including Netflix, Amazon Prime Video or YouTube – or any content on the iPlayer. Viewers who stick entirely to on-demand content on streaming services have always been exempt. But that might soon change.
A report from Bloomberg suggests the Government is considering forcing these viewers to pay the licence fee in order to help fund the BBC. They’d pay this even if they never watch the iPlayer or live TV. It’s a hugely controversial proposal that’s likely to infuriate people who have switched from traditional broadcasters to streaming services. have to pay for it even if you don’t watch it, just like your taxes cover schools if you don’t have children, or roads if you don’t drive.
