3. Creative processing with reverse compression
FILES
1> Let’s now look at compression in a creative context – for an unorthodox flavour, try reverse compression. This is similar in execution to reverse reverb, and pretty easy to achieve within any DAW. The first step is to copy the audio file to be processed and reverse it, then put it on a ‘temporary’ track with a compressor inserted into it.
2 > Here we’re processing a drum kit loop. Remember, since our audio is in reverse, the Attack setting will ultimately influence the decay stage, while the Release will become the attack stage. With the Release set fast, then, we can retain the transients; and by using reasonably heavy compression, we can add some colour to the release stage.
