I suppose it was always on the cards that, when it came to the monthly forum discussions about the latest issue of CC, the focus for the August issue would be firmly fixed on the cover car, Gary Gunn’s Pop coupe. This has proved to be a Marmite car if ever there was one. “I bet it handles good, just not my style,” “don’t like the Pop, but appreciate the work,” “lots of nice touches on it,” “waste of a Pop, ugly back end don’t like it at all,” “I must say that it is a brilliant car,” “really don’t like the car,” “ingenuity, imagination, thoughtful consideration and originality… One of the best, if not the best, hot rods I’ve ever seen in CC,” “one of the best British engineered rods built to date.” And that is but a mere snippet of the comments I’ve read. What all that goes to prove, though, is that we are all individuals, just as we should be. Some cars we like, some we don’t, and there is nothing at all wrong with that. The two most interesting comments I came across on the forums regarding this car were, “I always thought if you build a rod, build it the way you want it and not what everyone thinks it should be like,” and, “I thought the point about rodding was to be individualistic and not follow trends and styles.” To me, those comments sum up hot rodding perfectly, as without some guys thinking outside the box at times things would never move forward. If you don’t like what they come up with then so be it, but please be gracious and don’t condemn them for it.
