This 2ft 6in x 2ft 2in (80 x 67cm) oil on canvas of a violin player holding a wine glass is by Dirck Van Baburen, one of the group of 17th century Dutch artists known as the Utrecht Caravaggisti because they drew their inspiration from the dramatic style of the 16th century Italian master Caravaggio.
Baburen’s painting, from 1623, has been consigned from a private collection to Koller’s September 22 auction of Old Masters and 19th century paintings in Zurich. It is estimated at SFr60,000-80,000.
