Classic Car Buyer  |  CCB 17 July 2013
Last weekend it was my children’s school Summer Fair and as I’m a member of the school Parent-Teacher Association, I took part in the organisation and running of the event. As I did last year, my contribution was to provide ‘classic car rides’ for enthusiastic youngsters (and in many cases their parents) for £1 a time. My old mate (and fellow motoring
scribe) Nick Larkin brought his P4 Rover along, while I used my Rover P5 and Hillman Minx. It was popular too; at one point we had a queue of youngsters waiting for their turn. We let them choose which car they went in, and all three seemed equally popular. What’s more, after riding in one car, some of the children (who are aged roughly 7-11) asked to go out a second time in one of the others. I do this for two reasons. One, obviously, is to help raise funds for the PTA, money which enables the school to provide things for the children that it otherwise couldn’t. The other, is because I believe passionately that showing ‘our’
cars to people of this generation is an extremely good way of getting them interested. Clearly
it’s going to be a few years before any of them can drive, and many won’t be interested by then.
