Drama & Theatre Spring 1 has a focus on playwrights, and features an in-depth chat with Mackensie Wellfare, writer of Perspective – the National Theatre’s New Views competition winning play in 2021. We look at immersive theatre, an ever-bigger and more popular theatrical artform which is increasingly entering the mainstream, as Punchdrunk establish a permanent base in London; and at the equally prevalent phenomenon of digital and live-streamed theatre, which has really grown in the wake of the pandemic.
Teachers with students focusing on backstage and technical pathways can learn about new T Levels designed to cater for some of the skills leading into that part of the industry, and also read in detail about the role of the sound designer in theatre, in an interview piece by Nick Smurthwaite.
In the reviews section there’s an extra page this issue to make space for thoughts about three theatre performances: Puss in Moon Boots, The Hound of the Baskervilles, and The Ocean at the End of the Lane, with The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde also reviewed as part of a more general look at Blackeyed Theatre’s online hub for schools. We also review two educational streaming platforms, and a conference on the work of Dorothy Heathcote.
