TWENTY YEARS OF THE THRILL OF DRIVING
Volkswagen wants to take the chore out of driving. It also wants to build buses, establish a viable car-sharing business with a focus on autonomous driving, and evaluate flying cars. Not particularly inspiring news to hear on the eve of the Geneva motor show. Others at Geneva had a more palatable message. Porsche declared its cars will always have a steering wheel and petrol engines will remain core to its powertrain strategy. McLaren still only has eyes for sports, super and hypercars. AMG is using data from Project One’s development to improve its future models. Aston Martin will continue to mix traditional with tomorrow’s technology (all-electric Lagonda models). And Renault, Ford, Toyota and Hyundai all see no reason why their more mainstream models shouldn’t also be offered as halo performance variants. It will be a long time before driving becomes a chore for us.
