FlyPast  |   May 2020
The May 2020 issue of FlyPast features an exclusive air-to-air photography shoot with a newly restored Spitfire that’s now flying in Australia. Our cover star is a Mk.XVIe which made its first flight from Queensland earlier this year in the hands of British warbird pilot Richard Grace. This beautiful warbird is painted to represent the fighter flown by Australian ace Sqn Ldr Tony Gaze DFC in World War Two.
FlyPast Classics - Wessex
The unmistakeable Westland Wessex first flew in 1958 and went on to serve in numerous roles for both military and civilian operators. Malcolm V Lowe tells the story of this famously robust and long-lived helicopter, alongside exclusive artwork by Andy Hay.
Fly a Harvard
A new organisation in the UK offers experience flights and even pilot training in a genuine World War Two Harvard. Darren Harbar dons his flight suit.
Meteor Restoration
The Boscombe Down Aviation Collection has brilliantly refurbished a Meteor NF.11. The project is detailed by Hugh Trevor.
Black Arrows
Ian Stark describes the exploits of the RAF’s Black Arrows aerobatics team and its legendary 22-aircraft loop.
Eastern Front Stukas
Junkers Ju 87 dive-bombers were used to devastating effect by the Luftwaffe in the battle to capture the Crimean Peninsula, as Ian Baxter explains.
We also bring you news of the latest underwater discoveries in the Pacific – a Dauntless and Avenger – and report on the completion of a rare Saab bomber in Sweden. Craig Allen investigates the creation of an airworthy Sopwith Strutter reproduction, while Rod Hawkins shares stories from an operational tour on the Canberra in Germany during NATO’s nuclear face-off with the Warsaw Pact. We also salute an iconic fighter, the Spitfire Mk.I, in the third part of our Battle of Britain series.
