DIABETES UPDATE Should you go low-carb?

With news that the NHS now includes a low-carb plan for those with type 2 diabetes on its app store, dietitian Juliette Kellow looks at whether cutting carbs is a suitable approach for treating the condition

TRADITIONAL DIET ADVICE for people with type 2 diabetes is to adopt a healthy eating plan based on the Eatwell Guide that ideally we should all be following. This recommends around a third of what we eat should consist of starchy carbs, ideally high-fibre, wholegrain varieties – and that meals should be based on these foods. Current government advice is that half our daily intake of calories should come from carbs.

But in recent years, there’s been growing interest in the idea of reducing – or in some cases, even ditching – carbs like potatoes, bread, pasta and rice, to treat type 2 diabetes. Indeed, a growing number of healthcare professionals, including doctors, have been advising patients with type 2 diabetes to go low-carb.
