This is a hotly debated subject, filled with a lot of differing opinions. Anecdotal evidence suggests that horses prefer to travel backwards. This may be surprising, but it allows them to use their head and neck to balance, rather than leaning their quarters against the partitions, which happens most when horses travel facing forwards.
