Linus Torvalds announced the release of Linux 6.12, noting that there had been “no strange surprises” at the last minute. By far the biggest headline feature in 6.12 is the final – yes, really final, after oh-so-many years and years – merging of support for preempt-rt, aka the Real Time Linux kernel. This means that it will be possible to run 6.12 out of the box with the same kind of low latency that specialist audio setups and stock exchanges have been using for quite a few years now. Another pretty nifty feature is support for printing a special QR code containing error message information when the kernel crashes.
