Alistair Dunscombe, 33, from Southampton took on the British Heart Foundation’s (BHF) Bournemouth Pier to Pier swim for a second time in 2019 in memory of his best friend, who died suddenly at a young age. A week before the 2018 event, Alistair’s best friend Paul Stephens died suddenly due to an undiagnosed heart condition. Alistair, a senior content assistant for NHS Digital, said: “A week before the swim last year I went for a pub lunch with Paul and some friends to celebrate Paul turning 31 in two days’ time. That evening, I got a call to say he’d passed away. We were in our thirties, none of us would have imagined that could happen.
