WHAT ARE YOUR ABS?
The abs, or abdominals, are a group of muscles located at the front of your body, between your ribs and pelvis. Though we only correlate abs with being the bumpy bits on a six-pack, only one of the abdominal muscle groups is to thank for this: the rectus abdominis. But just because the others aren’t as evident, doesn’t mean they aren’t as important: your abs support your body, allow movement and even hold your organs in place.
CORE MUSCLES AND AB MUSCLES ARE THE SAME THING, RIGHT?
Nope. Though often considered as one and the same, your core muscles are the muscles deep within the abdominals and the back, which are attached to the spine or pelvis. So some groups of abdominal muscles do count as core muscles, but other muscles, not in the abdominal group — such as the pelvic floor and the oblique muscles — are also part of the core.
