BELGIAN Railways, known by its acronyms of SNCB (French) or NMBS (Flemish/Dutch), took delivery of 144 electric locos in 1981-1988, all designed for passenger use. Those remaining are now in their last year or two of service. All the locos, sharing similar bodyshells, were built at La Brugeoise et Nivelles in Bruges (later the Bombardier site, where the UK Voyagers were built and now part of Alstom). Most of the locos delivered were 3kV DC machines: 60 3.1kW Class 21 and 60 more powerful 4.1kW Class 27 locos.
The dual voltage locos of the same design have already been withdrawn; 12 1.5kV/3kV DC Class 11s, which were built to work Brussels-Amsterdam services, were all withdrawn by 2013, mostly now scrapped.
