‘Castles’ to Weymouth
BACK in the heady days of 1958, when I was a 14-year-old schoolboy in my home town of Weymouth, I used to go in my school lunch break over to Alexander bridge where I would be able to watch the 12:30 departure for Bristol go past.
I made a note in my diary of what loco was hauling the train on a daily basis for the entire year. The‘Castle’Class was represented some 84 times with 28 different engines, the most popular being No. 7015 Carn Brea Castle (10 occasions), closely followed by No. 7011 Banbury Castle (eight), and Nos. 7035 Ogmore Castle and 5067 St Fagans Castle (six each). The now preserved No. 4079 Pendennis Castle appeared on two occasions.
