In an industry first, Maersk has successfully converted its container ship, Maersk Halifax, into a dual-fuel vessel capable of operating on methanol. This project, which took 88 days to complete, was carried out by Zhoushan Xinya Shipyard in China. The work involved extensive modifications, including replacing engine parts to enable methanol operation, and installing new fuel tanks, a fuel preparation room and a fuel supply system. The ship’s hull was also extended by 15m, increasing its length to 368m and boosting capacity by around 850 units to 15,690TEU.
This is the second significant rebuild for Maersk Halifax. Initially completed by Hyundai HI in 2017 as Maersk Honam, the vessel had her forward section completely replaced after a severe fire in the Arabian Sea in March 2018. Maersk Halifax has entered service on Maersk’s Trans-Pacific routes.
