Minimising their impact on the environment is at the core of most tour operators’, camps’ and lodges’ philosophies — whether it be using responsibly sourced construction materials, solar power, eliminating plastics or simply locating the camp where it does not detract from the wilderness, among others. Here are just a few examples of the many hundreds of initiatives being employed across the continent
GAME-CHANGING CONSTRUCTION
Kisawa Sanctuary on Benguerra Island, Mozambique, is using a patented 3Dprinting technology to help reduce the impact of building in an isolated location. “Using design as a tool, not a style”, entreprenuer Nina Flohr is using the innovative technology to create mortar from saltwater and sand, which is then merged with Mozambican weaving, thatching, carpentry and textile skills. The machine will also print sand coral reefs and marine habitats for the Bazaruto Center for Scienti ic Studies. Could this usher in a whole new era of sustainablybuilt lodges in remote places?
