Focus on speed
Many runners are intimidated by speedwork, but the truth is that you don’t need to be a fast runner to do it… it’s all about what’s fast for you. And it’s not only about making you speedier. Speed work is a great way to add variety to your training and challenge the different energy systems required for pleasurable, efficient running. “There are other myths that need clearing up about speedwork”, says top running and tri coach, Karen Weir. “Firstly, it will make you faster, but it’s not the only thing that will make you faster – building a good aerobic base with long, slow runs will also do that, along with strength and core work.
