Cover Story of this D&AD 2018 Awards Winning Yes & No features Alison Goldfrapp of Goldfrapp—one of the most enduring British electronic bands of the past 20 years. Editor Cassius Matthias met with Goldfrapp and talked to her about her new photographic work, discovering a little-known side of the publicity-shy recording artist. The Y&N 02:01 Centrefold is by British-born artist Adam McEwen. American artist Tom Burr graces the Back Cover with “early childhood development”—the culmination of a collaboration spanning five editions of Yes & No that began last year with the inaugural Centrefold. “Journey to Southern Crimea: A Photographic Report, Part One” by Brigitte Lacombe is a two-part feature showing a selection of Lacombe’s photo’s taken on a cultural expedition to the Black Sea Coast—a disputed territory between Ukraine and Russia that’s in the midst of an international crisis. In conversation with Bernie Krause is the first in a series of Moog GIANTS—featuring celebrated and honorary Moog Modular Artists. Pin Drop, the home of short fiction, brings the first story from their portfolio “Undine” by Melanie Whipman in this new collaboration curated by Simon Oldfield. Whipman’s story, about the underbelly of Brighton and a mermaid, is accompanied by a watercolour by London culture icon Princess Julia. The Swedish poet Johanna Ekström is widely regarded in Sweden, but little-known in the English speaking world. We introduce Ekström with her autobiographical text “Notes on Writing and Life”. Canadian artist Dara Vandor presents “Upskirts” and “Honourable Discharge” — mind-boggling drawings that are manifestations of a personal exploration of the beginnings of womanhood. Veteran film critic and historian Derek Malcolm reviews the best of Cannes 2018—the Golden Globe, BAFTA, and Oscar hopefuls. The seasonal menu is courtesy of Monica Galetti of Mere, London, with wines matched by her husband, Sommelier David Galetti.

Yes & No is a new quarterly magazine that embraces today’s new realites, holding up a cultural mirror to reflect the eclectic yet fragile world while rigorously asking: What? How? Why? Where?

YES & NO represents a defiant movement against the certainties that increasingly divide us. Contained within its beautifully designed pages — in digital and print — it speaks to like-minded people who are increasingly dismayed by the stark choices that have defined the political landscape in recent years. The content-rich quarterly magazine is made for people who believe in a more fluid, creative approach — for people who see value in exploring life from all angles and who embrace a multiple range of solutions to the task of navigating the modern world. YES & NO is tolerant, exploratory, curious and promotes a stimulating mixture of science, art and culture for our times. It is designed to raise questions than to provide answers. It’s a companion for the modern world — a manifesto for anyone who embraces life’s complexities rather than confining it within the parameters of either yes or no
