DUBROVNIK
Built on a rocky coastal spur, this historic Croatian city buzzes with a youthful energy, says Maria Pasquale. Its food is enriched with Balkan, Turkish and Venetian influences with great wines to boot, and an out-of-season visit lets you escape the crowds

WALK THE WALLS
The imposing medieval walls of Dubrovnik are the city’s centrepiece. Stari Grad, or Old Town, is a UNESCO protected heritage site and retains impressive remnants of Middle Ages fortification. The best way to see the city is on a guided walk of the walls. Dubrovnik Walks offers Game of Thrones – the King’s Landing sequences were filmed here – and Walls and Wars tours (dubrovnikwalks.com; €20 per person, plus city walls entrance fee). Walks last for two hours and offer spectacular views of the terracotta tiled rooftops, ancient gates and fortresses and labyrinth of narrow streets.
