FRIDAY NIGHT
Here’s one for Easter Friday (or any Friday night you fancy): a feelgood musical from Hollywood’s golden age. Fred Astaire and Judy Garland, with a swell (but easy) menu
WORDS: LES DUNN
EASTER PARADE (1948)
WHAT’S IT ABOUT?
It’s the spring of 1911, and successful Broadway performer Don Hewes (Fred Astaire) is dumped by his glamorous dancing partner Nadine (Ann Miller), who’s been offered a starring role in her own show.
While drowning his sorrows, Don tells a random dancer he could make her a star as his new partner. Of course the uprooted country-turned-chorus girl, Hannah Brown, just happens to be Judy Garland…
Will Don’s gambit work? Will he stop pining over Nadine? Will his best friend Johnny (British actor Peter Lawford) nab Hannah from under Don’s workobsessed nose? You can probably already guess, but the fun is in the telling.
