Jon Devo takes the Nikon Z 9 out for a test drive and it’s good… but is it too good?

Jon is a professional photographer, videographer and technology journalist.

Using the Nikon Z 9 is cheating. Yes, I said it. When you have a stills camera that can rattle off 120fps with AI-powered continuous phase detection autofocus and auto exposure, can you even take credit for nailing the shot anymore?

T he Nikon Z 9 was late to the mirrorless flagship party, but it is truly a thing to behold. It’s built like a tank and has a spec sheet that looks like a press, sports and wildlife photographer’s wishlist. It’s the first Nikon to do away with a mechanical shutter. Instead, it has a 45.7MP BSI stacked sensor that’s only triggered by an eShutter. That’s what lets it capture 8K/30p video, 11MP stills at 120fps and 45MP stills at 30fps with full AF. It’s set to get better via firmware update if and when it gets the ability to shoot 8K-video at 60fps in 12-bit ProRes RAW HQ, as promised by Nikon.
