Blaming the powerless
WHEN STRAIGHT, WHITE, MIDDLE¡ CLASS MEDIA PUNDITS DERIDE MINORITIES, WHAT’S REALLY GOING ON?
WORDS JANE CZYZSELSKA
Heard about the students who banned transexclusionary radical feminists from speaking at their universi ties? The working class, black feminists who pointed out to some straight, middle class, white feminists that their activism wasn’t intersectional and didn’t speak for them? All the above have been derided as “divisive”, some are accused of being liberty-crushing, authoritarian “bullies”.
You may have caught the Radio 4 programme, The Moral Maze, in which media pundits Michael Buerk, Melanie Phillips and Claire Fox denigrated so-called “victims” for whinging about their problems. Problems like, you know, homophobia, sexism, transphobia, racism and heteronormativity.
