IN THE ROOM WHERE IT HAPPENS
Props to the Metro, which this month has appointed nonbinary writer, filmmaker and trans campaigner Owl Fisher as a regular online columnist. As Mediawatch readers will know, I often use this column to call out poor journalism, so it brings me great joy to take a break from writing about relentless media attacks on trans people to bring you some good news, for once.
Owl’s appointment, coming soon after Paris Lees was announced as a columnist for Vogue, is significant for many reasons. At a time of increasing hostility and media transphobia, with the mainstream press wilfully misleading the public on trans issues, it’s crucial that we – non-cishet people – have a platform to challenge these narratives, and what better platform than a seat at the table within those very newsrooms?
