Back in May 2022, my girlfriend ended our relationship. We were together for three and a half years and I felt devastated, heartbroken and rejected. The emptiness and numbness arrived soon afterwards. The pain I felt can only be compared to when someone close to me has died.
When a relationship ends, you’re not only grieving for the loss of that person who is no longer in your life, but also the relationship itself. The relationship has “died” and you now have to navigate a way forward.
Many of us struggle to comprehend death – the physical consequences of it and the emotional and traumatic ramifications – myself included. One of the worst aspects about a relationship “death” for me, is that the person you were in the relationship with is still out there, alive.
