MAISIE RICHARDSONSELLERS TALKS TO ROXY BOURDILLON ABOUT GENDER, DIVERSITY AND SHARING HER LOVE LIFE ONLINE
MAISIE RICHARDSON-SELLERS
”In my dream world, we’d have screens that represent actual society”
Maisie Richardson-Sellers is a remarkable woman. So remarkable, in fact, that spending an hour in her company makes me seriously reevaluate my life choices. Why haven’t I read more feminist literature by bell hooks? To date, I’ve played literally zero groundbreaking superheroes on TV. And how come my face doesn’t glow like that when I’m not wearing make-up?
She’s an overachiever, for sure, and with her string of roles in hit series, including Legends Of Tomorrow and The Originals, Maisie seems to be totally nailing this slippery thing called life. She’s also one of the most eloquent, engaging interviewees I’ve encountered. But then you’d expect nothing less of an Oxford graduate with an Instagram feed as full of weighty tomes as stunning selfies with her gorgeous girlfriend, singersongwriter CLAY.
I meet Maisie on her lunch break, deep in rehearsals for comedian Katy Brand’s new play, 3Women. “It’s a drama-comedy about three generations of the same family”, she tells me. “A grandmother, mother and daughter. It looks into what it means to be a woman, the conflict between generations and how we can bridge the differences.”
Maisie plays 18-year-old fresher, Laurie. “She’s exploring her gender, her sexual identity and how she can improve the world. She’s genderfluid and dating a trans man in an open relationship.
