Free life-changing opportunities
REETA LOI SHARES HER JOURNEY INTO AN EXCITING EMERGING SCENE
”We tapped into the ravenous hunger to meet people like us”
When I decided I wanted to go to university, 25 years ago, no women in my family had ever been. My chances of being allowed were slim to none. Convincing dad was my only hope. But back then, in a migrant and working class Indian family like mine, doing an arts subject was entirely out of the question.
I began planting seeds about the opportunities that lay ahead if I were to go to university. Eventually, I was met with “lawyer, doctor or accountant, which one?” from dad. I didn’t fancy being any of those. So I picked up a copy of the Financial Times, opened up the jobs section and found that marketing directors were being paid £60k. Bingo. The degree was a breeze for me, a shop kid, who sold football stickers, sweets and fags to order at school.
