EVOLUTION
Dir Lucile Emina Hadžihalilović
Once upon a time, a group of little boys lived with their mothers on the shore of a dark, cold sea… Monster-story Evolution avoids easy empathy or obvious jump-scares, slowly swishing around between body horror and sci-fi poetry. It does, however, put the ermigawd into ‘“mermaid” quite successfully. With her island of creepy, alien sirens, Lucile Hadžihalilović provides a horrifying double-take on all aspects of female biology, from scary pregnancy, to powerful motherhood, to mysterious sexuality. Blink and you’ll miss it, but there’s some polyamorous lesbian alien sex, too... With minimal music or dialogue, the storytelling can be a bit confusing, but haunting nevertheless.
