“When we say ‘raised as a boy’, what is that? What are we raising?”

While researching American singersongwriter Holly Miranda, I stumble across a YouTube gem (tinyurl.com/DIVAholly). It’s Holly, aged 10, singing a passionate, improvised power ballad directly to camera: “I wanna open up to you, Don’t break my heart, I wanna come inside of you, Oh yeah, I do”. When I thank Holly for making my week, she laughs raspily down the phone. “There’s a look in my eye at that moment, like I feel like I just said something kind of fucked up, but I don’t really know what it means. I think I meant to say, ‘I want to be inside of your heart’, judging from my props I’m throwing around.”
