With LGBTQ people having mostly achieved – at least on a legal level – equal rights in most of the UK, it can be easy to forget the ongoing punishment of queer people worldwide. But same-sex relationships are still illegal in 72 nations, and hundreds of LGBTQ asylum seekers flee to the UK each year in a bid to escape persecution in their home countries.

Figures released for the first time by the Home Office in November 2017 – described by the department as “experimental” – show that 3,535 asylum claims received between 1 July 2015 and 31 March 2017 were made on the basis of sexual orientation. More than two thirds (2,379) of these were refused.
