The Complete Ninth Series

Another year for the Doctor and Clara… How did they fare this time round?

DVD/BLU-RAY

BBC

RRP £31.99 (DVD), £39.99 (Blu-ray)

The Twelfth Doctor started life in a bad mood. Maybe it was something to do with having just spent a thousand-year-long Christmas with all his worst enemies. Whatever the reason, he got out of bed on the wrong side in his début episode Deep Breath, and thereafter he was a proper grump. There was a sweeter, kinder Doctor in there somewhere, but throughout his first year he rarely let it shine through.

It’s a shame, then, that the very likeable 2014 Christmas Special couldn’t have rounded off the box set of Peter Capaldi’s first series. Instead it’s included here with his second. Last Christmas provides a better conclusion to 2014’s run than the downbeat ending to season finale Death in Heaven. The Doctor and Clara are finally honest with each other, and the episode ends on an optimistic note as they resolve to head off and have some fun.

Halfway through the 2015 season opener The Magician’s Apprentice, the Doctor rolls in throwing shapes atop a tank. Leaping to the ground, we’re soon treated to him serenading Clara with a rendition of Pretty Woman on his electric guitar.

This superficial rebranding of the uncompromising, 100 per cent rebel Time Lord is controversial in some circles. Even if they agree that the Doctor’s latest incarnation would benefit from a little lightening up, some feel that the guitar and sonic sunglasses seem undignified, un-Doctorish. But that’s not a fair summation.
