Big Finish continues to provide plenty of new audio episodes of Doctor Who. Executive producer Nicholas Briggs looks back on a busy 12 months.
Stories from the fifth series of The Fourth Doctor Adventures.

The immense catalogue of audio dramas from Big Finish now includes productions inspired by the earliest and most recent years of Doctor Who. There have never been so many Doctors and companions under the same roof.

The company’s Doctor Who releases for 2016 kicked off with the fifth series of The Fourth Doctor Adventures, with Tom Baker (as the Doctor) and John Leeson (as K9) joined by Lalla Ward as the second incarnation of Romana. Over eight stories, the travellers faced Vardans, vampires, malign wax people, the shifty Drax, and a planet literally at war with its own past. The two-part series finale wrapped up a long-running storyline devised by writer, director, and executive producer Nicholas Briggs in the early days of the Fourth Doctor range, with the return of ruthless industrialist Cuthbert (David Warner), his sidekick Mr Dorrick (Toby Hadoke), and a mysterious parrot…

“The parrot we put in because Tom was fond of the idea,” says Nick, laughing. “He’s not actually interested in these wacky ideas being in the finished product, he just wants to experience the moment in the studio. Then when we were actually recording it, he was quite confused by the fact there was a parrot in it! ‘But this was your idea, Tom!’

“I would be over-modest not to say they were my favourites of this series,” he continues. “There was so much history and effort going into it to make it work – to get David Warner and Toby Hadoke back, to have David Troughton in, playing the Black Guardian. That was lots of fun to do. My main motivation in doing all this is to make the crazy ideas in my head come to life.”
