When actor availability put paid to Erin Horáková’s story of the Fourth Doctor, Romana and an intergalactic academic conference, Short Trips producer Al. e Shaw o. ered her the Third Doctor and Liz Shaw instead. It was then that she decided to write about ‘phreaking’ - the ingenious methods used to hack the telecoms systems of the 20th century, and the culture that formed around them.
