Roads less travelled
Back when Edge launched, the racing game was one of the great system sellers, the performance of the simulation a direct indicator of the power of its host machine. Now, the genre almost feels like a hobbyist niche, barring a handful of names – Forza, Gran Turismo, Mario Kart – that cover a lot of ground. Perhaps it’s because, as hardware has advanced, there’s less to differentiate one generation’s drive from the next, while the act of driving – steer, accelerate, brake – is largely fixed.
