It’s hard to put into words the feeling of waking up in New York. It’s something Australian actor Marlo Kelly and I discussed at length on a recent trip to the city. For all of New York’s hassles — the trains that never arrive, the taxis caught in gridlock, the price of wine — a morning in the city tends to exclusively encapsulate an optimistic sense of, Something exciting might happen in my life, today!
Like me, Kelly, the Sydney-born star of the Netflix hit series 3 Body Problem, recently called Manhattan home. Her first few nights in the city some years back were spent on the Lower East Side, where angry drivers sounded their car horns long into the night. “There wasn’t a single moment of quiet the entire evening,” Kelly recalls with a smile. “I ended up moving uptown to an apartment by Central Park and it was very quiet. I would go for a walk in the park every morning and was able to sort of tap into the chaos of the city when necessary, and not have to continually exist within it.
