CAST John Cho, Mia Isaac, Kaya Scodelario
When single father Max (John Cho) is diagnosed with a seemingly inoperable cancer, he makes a decision to spend the last year of his life ensuring his teenage daughter Wally (Mia Isaac) has everything she needs for the future — including a reunion with her estranged mother. The pair then embark on a road trip to find her, and it’s filled with touching, relatable moments that are genuinely moving to watch. At the start of the film, Wally (who also narrates) tells us we’re “not going to like the ending”, but we’ll “like the story. As such, the film’s bizarre denouement is a clumsy misstep, souring the tale we’ve happily invested in for the previous 90 minutes for the sake of some very poorly judged shock value.
