Ah, the ups and downs of love. Yas (Vivian Oparah) and Dom (David Jonsson).
RAINE ALLEN-MILLER’S Rye Lane, which tells the story of how two lost and lonely souls (David Jonsson’s Dom and Vivian Oparah’s Yas) connect over the course of one chaotic night in South London, is one of the finest and funniest romcoms in many a year. It’s a film so tied to its setting — shot entirely on location in areas like Peckham and Brixton — that it’s wild to think that writers Tom Melia and Nathan Bryon originally set it in North London and had a completely different title. “It was called ‘Vibes And Stuff ’!” laughs Allen-Miller. “But I always really believed in the idea of setting this film in South London.”
Now that the film is on Disney+, we decided to bridge the North/South (London) divide and bring together Allen-Miller, writers Melia and Bryon, and stars Jonsson and Oparah for a walk through the film’s key moments, filled with vibes and stuff.
THE TOILET
The film begins with Dom having something of an emotional breakdown on a toilet in the Coal Rooms in Peckham, when into the cubicle next door — and his life — walks Yas. The opening shot sees the camera track along various cubicles in which all manner of stuff is happening, before alighting on Dom.
Nathan Bryon:
It’s such a dynamic start to the movie. You definitely never expect to start a romcom flashing over all the different toilets in London. Who is in these different toilets? That was a nice brainstorming session.
