Luca Guadagnino: “I think of the scene in Tod Browning’s Freaks, in which all the freaks of the circus realise that the woman who married the proprietor of the circus — this lovely man, who’s a dwarf — manipulated him only for greed. All these freaks crawl towards the camera, chanting, ‘One of us, one of us.’ Later, they make her into a hen. It’s one of the most disturbing and powerful and strangely life-affirming scenes ever. It’s one of the greatest masterpieces of cinema. ‘One of us! One of us!’”
