A turn-of-the-millennium throwback that leans too heavily on nostalgia, Y2K is part romcom, part horror, and too unfocused to commit to either one. When introvert Eli (Jaeden Martell) finds himself at a party with best friend Danny (Julian Dennison) and popular tech wiz Laura (Rachel Zegler), all hell breaks loose via self-aware murder-bots assembled from household electronics. These tech monsters want all humans to conform, a theme that seldom connects to the movie’s colourful characters, while Kyle Mooney doesn’t find his directorial groove, assembling a haphazard film with flimsy set-ups and payoffs that come out of the blue. On the plus side, at least the hair and outfits are all period-accurate.
