DYLAN JOHN THOMAS
DYLAN JOHN THOMAS
IGNITION
★★★
A protégé of Gerry Cinnamon who counts Liam Gallagher and Suggs as fans, the Glasgow singer-songwriter has Shack’s mix of simple acoustics and emotional complexity in his finest songs. Fever is a communal strum, while What I Need is a singalong for the ages. With such a sparse accompaniment, other tunes can sound like demos, with Champs-Élysées resembling a Courteeners offcut. Thomas’ sharp lyrics and the naturalistic charm of his vocals generally carries him through, but more variety next time out would be welcome.
