The Scottish Government doesn’t get everything right, but what government does? Mostly governments are damned if they do and damned if they don’t. But the Scottish Government has shown on several occasions that, far from being the government of a ‘too wee, too poor, too stupid country that couldn’t go it alone’, they are capable of setting international social precedents on a range of issues.
I now live in Australia where, one month ago, after an 18-year campaign, the Australian Government passed legislation to remove their equivalent of VAT from women’s sanitary products, though the products still have to be bought regardless of your level of income. Around the same time the Scottish Government initiated a £5.2m investment aimed at providing free sanitary products to women and girls who fell under the ‘poverty threshold’ and also made them freely available in schools, colleges and universities.
