Painting the landscape is actually one of the most difficult of subjects because there is simply so much that can go wrong. To condense it onto a 2D piece of paper while trying to make it look 3D is difficult. It is often easier to paint a landscape as an abstract with purely representational spots and splodges but a beautiful true-to-life landscape can also be painted.
