Last month we showed you three documents relating to different criminal trials. How did you get on with answering the challenges we set you?
Document A – Yorkshire Quarter Sessions, James Shiers & Elizabeth Lockwood
I When and where were James and Elizabeth tried?
They were tried at the Leeds Sessions on 17 October 1870.
II How was their alleged offence described in the Criminal Trial Register?
The relevant Home Office Criminal Trial Register (TNA reference: HO27/157 f.255) shows that they were charged with ‘Keeping a Disorderly House’ – in other words, a brothel.
