Have you ever had a conversation that gives you so much to think about? A conversation that has so much soul, and you say to yourself – wow! Can we meet and continue this discussion under a tree in the African sun, with some mangoes and a cold coke?! Well this is one of those conversations. I thought it would be lovely to share with our esteemed readers a little glimpse of who Trevor is through this short interview. We all know him as a South African photographer.
Visual artist. Storyteller. Countless titles describe Trevor Stuurman – but defining him? That’s a dif ferent story. I could talk about his award-winning work – images imbued with an arresting sense of colour and curiosity. I could talk about his contributions to Beyoncé’s Emmy award-winning Black is King but wait and see what he says about this moment. But if there’s one thing that defines this nomadic visionary, it is his intention, his purpose, his why. Whether through thoughtful styling or iconic images, there’s an undeniable air of consideration to all that he creates. Through his art, Stuurman aims to reclaim the all-too-of ten hijacked narrative of what Africa is, and of what her people are.
