BEST&WORST MILLWALL
Merv Payne, author of Because My Dad Does and four other books, still isn’t over 40-year-old broken promises
XI
BEST: Kasey Keller, Keith Stevens, Colin Cooper, Dave Cusack, Ian Dawes, Terry Hurlock, Tim Cahill, Alex Rae, Jimmy Carter, Teddy Sheringham, Neil Harris.
WORST: Peter Wells, Justin Hoyte, Lawrie Madden, Sam Allardyce, David Stride, Alan West, Dave Sinclair, Willie Carr, Phil Stamp, Robbie Cooke, Gary Taylor-Fletcher.
MOMENT
B: The final whistle at Hull’s Boothferry Park on May 2, 1988, when a 1-0 win meant we were promoted to the top flight as champions. It was pure, unadulterated, footballing heaven which only the final whistle in our 2004 FA Cup semi-final has come close to matching.
W: Jim Cannon’s leveller in the last minute of our promotion clash with Crystal Palace in 1988. An incorrectly awarded goal-kick and a missed handball, before it was crossed for that bloody Billy Connolly lookalike to score off his knee. I was dating a Palace-supporting girl at the time. That didn’t last long...
GOAL
B: Gary Alexander’s blockbuster in the 2009 League One Play-off Final [above]. Google it. The greatest goal Wembley will ever witness.
